Grant H. Shaft is the President of Grant H. Shaft PLLC, doing business as Shaft Law Office in Grand Forks, North Dakota, where he concentrates his law practice in the areas of transactional real estate and title insurance. Grant has four decades of experience in representing individuals, developers, lenders, governments and businesses in residential and commercial real estate transactions throughout North Dakota and Minnesota.  Grant’s practice also includes matters ancillary to his real estate practice including business law and estate planning.

Grant has been a Fellow in the American College of Real Estate Lawyers since 2002 and is widely recognized of one of the deans of North Dakota real estate attorneys having chaired the North Dakota Bar Association’s Real Property, Probate and Trust Law Section from 1992-2019 and having served as a member of the Title Standards Committee from 1988-2019. Grant has been a lecturer at the University of North Dakota School of Law and countless continuing legal education seminars. He has authored numerous publications, contributions and articles including the North Dakota Law Review.

Grant earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Arizona State University and his Juris Doctor from the University of North Dakota School of Law in 1986. He has served as a member of the Board of Governors for the North Dakota Bar Association, a member of many Association committees and as a legislative lobbyist for the Association. Since 1996, Shaft has served the State of North Dakota as a Special Assistant Attorney General. Related to his practice, he is a licensed North Dakota abstracter and a previously licensed title insurance agent.

Grant served in the North Dakota House of Representatives from 1986 to 1990 and was a member of the North Dakota University System’s Board of Trustees from 2007 to 2015 with the responsibility of governing the State’s 11 institutions of higher education.

Members of Grant’s extended family have practiced law since the 1922 and include his grandfather, Harold D. Shaft, his father, John G. Shaft, aunt, Barbara Shaft Faletti, uncles, Harrison Barnes and Richard Faletti and his son, John W. Shaft.
